I’m reading this amazing book, by Dr. David Perlmutter titled “Grain Brain.”
If you follow any of my writings (God help you), you know that I am a Dyslexia Specialist as well as a coach.
When I first started working with dyslexic students, I read an extraordinary amount of work that scientifically proved after 2-3 years of the correct reading program, a person with dyslexia would create new brain pathways.
Enough, in fact, that their brain would scan like that of a regular reader, one who does not have dyslexia.
Fast forward to learning about coaching, questioning, and forging new neural networks in that occupation.
Same thing: with enough thought work, people can actually change the structure of their brain.
This finding has been coined into the term, “brain plasticity.” New research proves that we can learn anything, at any age.
I don’t mean to scare anyone, but I am going to tell my personal story.
I have a history of depression, anxiety, migraines, as well as Rheumatoid Arthritis. (All related, by the by…)
Pain is my friend. Or not, depending on the day.
I am vested in both my left brain and right brain, so it makes sense that as a patient, I believe in both Eastern and Western Medicine.
So, I take the MEDs my regular doctor prescribes, and also look for alternative medicine.
The first thing I read a lot about was going gluten free. So, I took the plunge, and low and behold, not eating gluten is definitely good for reducing my level of pain!
What I wasn’t expecting is that I would eventually find out that my dyslexic and ADHD students also would benefit from the same regime.
At this point, we can add people with anxiety, depression, migraines, and memory issues, all of the people I coach.
Coincidence? I think not.
I am currently reading “Grain Brain” by Dr. David Perlmutter, and I can’t put it down. I read it once, and now I’m reading it again.
Here is an excerpt from the website:
‘Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that’s been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age. He offers an in-depth look at how we can take control of our “smart genes” through specific dietary choices and lifestyle habits, demonstrating how to remedy our most feared maladies without drugs.’
It’s like all of the pieces of my life are falling into place. Literally.
If you suffer from depression, anxiety, memory loss, dyslexia, learning issues, or ADHD to name a few, it’s a must read.
Have fun eating your healthy proteins people!
Love you bunches
